To qualify for the SSC CHSL 2021 descriptive exam with flying colors, candidates were required to have thorough knowledge of its syllabus and exam pattern. The exam pattern of SSC CHSL 2021 was comprised of three tiers. Take a look at the overview of these 3-tiers: 

The SSC CHSL Exam Pattern for Tier II is given here below: 

• Tier II was a descriptive paper of 100 marks in pen and paper mode. The time duration of the exam will be 1 hour.
• The SSC CHSL Tier-II exam will assess the writing skills of a candidate. 
• It was comprised of 2 sections - Essay writing and letter writing. 
• Candidates were writing an essay of 200-250 words and an application letter of 150-200. 
• The minimum qualifying percentage for the Tier-II exam was 35%. Candidates, please note that the Tier-II exam was used to prepare merit in the assessment process. 
• Candidates had a choice to write the exam in either English/Hindi. However, the mixing of both languages was prohibited. 
• There was no negative marking in the examination. 

SSC CHSL Essay Writing Format (Till 2021)

Till 2021, the SSC CHSL Tier II exam consisted of essay writing. However, as per the new SSC CHSL exam pattern, there will be no essay writing section. An essay was a piece of writing centred around a particular topic given by the examiner. It was meant to assess your writing skills, understanding of the topic, and ability to form your ideas into words. Introduction

Take care of the following key points while writing the introduction for an essay: 

• Grab the examiner's attention by beginning with a quote in the context of the topic. 
• You may also highlight some background information concerning the given topic. 
• Highlight the outline of the argument in a few sentences for the examiner to get an overview of the situation. 

Body

To write the body of an essay, take note of the following points:

• Form clear, short, and crisp sentences highlighting the situation's WHAT/WHERE/WHY/HOW. 
• Explain why a certain situation is an obstacle for our country. If talking about certain government schemes, then highlight their pros and cons. 
• If talking about any environmental or societal issues, highlight why they are prevailing in our country and how they are weakening our various systems.
• Also, bring to the examiners notice about what can be done by the governing authorities to resolve these issues. 
• Support your words with facts and examples. 
• Take care that your paragraphs are cohesive and the essay has a proper flow. 

Conclusion

While concluding your essay, you must: 

• Go back to the background of the introduction.
• Summarize the points you've highlighted throughout the essay.
• Furthermore, highlight a road map regarding the solutions to the problem and future implications of the same.

A précis was defined as the summary of a given passage, excluding unimportant text and writing it in your language. Précis was regarded as important from an examiner's point of view because it involves testing a candidate's ability to differentiate between what is essential and what is not. Précis writing involves the following points: 

• An outline of the original passage. 
• Abstract of the passage.
• Ability to select appropriate words and sentences.
