Questions related to Blood Relation come very frequently in various top level government examinations such as UPSC, SSC, RBI Grade B, SBI PO, SBI Clerk, IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, etc.

Questions which come from this section are usually very easy to solve but they are designed in a tricky way. To solve the question that comes in this section candidates need to read the questions very carefully and they draw a flowchart to get the final result. Therefore, before going forward let us see some of the basic concepts related to Blood Relation to score the maximum marks in this section.

What is Blood Relation?

Blood Relation between two individuals is defined as a relation between them by the virtue of their birth rather than by their marriage or any other reasons. Blood Relation questions involve analysis of information showing the blood relationship among members of the family. In this, a chain of relationship is given in the form of information and on the basis of this information, relation between two members of the chain is asked from the candidates.

Candidates are supposed to be familiar with the knowledge of different hierarchical structure of the family, which is generally the three generation above and three generation below the current generation. So in short, Blood Relation involves questions which aims to find a relation among the members of a family and based on the given information on the question candidates need to find the relationship between members of the family such as any relation by birth will be mother, father, son, daughter etc. Whereas, any relation by marriage will be father in law, mother in law, sister in law etc.

Types of Blood Relation

As now we know what consists of a Blood Relation reasoning section. Let us see the various types of Blood Relation one by one from below.

1. Pointing or Introducing

In this type of questions, a person points at or introduces some through conversation or by any other way, and candidates need to find out the relationship between them. Let us see an example from below to understand it more clearly.

Example: Pointing to a lady, Rahul said “She is the wife of my mother’s father’s only grandchild”. How is that related to Rahul?

Solution: If we draw the family tree then we can clearly see that here Rahul’s mother’s father means Rahul’s grandfather. Rahul’s grandfather has only one grandchild who is a male as the lady is that person’s wife. So, the grandchild is Rahul himself and the lady should be the wife of Rahul. Therefore, the correct answer here would be “Wife”

2. Family Tree

In this type of Blood Relation reasoning questions, questions related to the relationship between two different family members will be provided in the question and candidates will be asked to find the relationship between any two of them. The type of questions are also known as by law or by blood type Blood Relation reasoning.

Example: Rahul is the son of Mohan. Hari is the father of Manu. Rahul is married to Dina. Rahul and Manu are Siblings. Kanav is the brother of Dina. Mohan has only one son. Neha is the son of Rahul. Kanav is the father of Akash. What is the relationship between Kanav and Akash respectively?

Solution: If we observe the question carefully we can see that Kanav is the Father of Akash but Akash’s gender is not known. Therefore, the correct answer will be “Cannot be determined” from the above statements.

3. Coded Relation

In this type of questions family members are represented as particular codes or symbols such as +, $, *, &, #, @, !, etc. By decoding the symbols or coded candidates need to find the correct result.

Example: First consider the below statements carefully.

P $ Q implies that P is the sister of Q

P % Q implies that P is the brother of Q

P & R implies that P is the mother of R

P @ S implies that P is the son of S

Now find out the relationship between F and D from the following expression such as D % C @ G $ H $ F

Solution: The above statements implies the following things.

P is

Symbol$%&@
Meaning Sister BrotherMother Son

Of Q

So by analysing the above table we can deduce the above expression D % C @ G $ H $ F as “D is the brother of C”, “C is the son of G”, “G is the sister of H”, and “H is the sister of F”. The gender of F is unknown. So F can be either uncle or aunt of D. Therefore, the correct response for this question will be “Uncle or Aunt”

How to Solve Question Based on Blood Relation- Know all tips and tricks

Candidates can find various tips and tricks from below for solving the questions related to the Blood Relation reasoning section.

Tip # 1: Candidates need to consider “ME” as the introducing person to answer questions asked in the Blood Relation reasoning section quickly.

Tip # 2: For the example given in the Coded Relation type blood relation section candidates need to check all the options carefully including the gender, and finally by eliminating the wrong options candidates can come to the final conclusion.

Tip # 3: Never predict the gender of a person on the basis of name, unless otherwise mentioned, as it may lead to a wrong answer.

Tips # 6: Correlating the relations given in questions with the personal relations will help in understanding the questions in a better way.

Tips # 7: Candidates should always use pictorial representation to solve the questions because in this form candidates can systematically arrange the data and this will make it easy for a student to understand the relations.

Blood Relation Sample Questions

Question 1: Introducing a lady at the party, Goldy told her friend, “She is sister-in-law of my only brother who is father of Ganesh who is grandson of Navya’s husband who is my father who has only two child.” How is Ganesh related to that lady?

Solution: If we analyse all the statements given above in the question and draw the family tree for the same, then we get the answer nephew. Hence, Ganesh is the nephew of that lady.

Question 2:

Given Directions

[email protected] means M is the wife of N

M#N means M is the son of N

M5N means M is the sister of N

M$N means M is the father of N

Question 2: Which of the following expressions shows I as the brother of H?

(i) H#P$I, (ii) H%P$I, (iii) I%H$P, (iv) H%I$P

The above statements implies the following things.

M is

Symbol#%$@
Meaning SonSister FatherWife

Of N

From the above options, we need to find an expression which represents I as the brother of H.

So, check all the options and eliminate those in which either the gender is of I is unknown, or I is female.

In the above question, @ and % represents wife and sister respectively such as female so eliminate all such options. And if in any expression, I is present in the end then it means that the gender of I will be unknown so eliminate such options too.

From the above trick we can eliminate options 1,2, and 3. Hence in the expression “H%I$P”, I is the brother of H.
