GATE 2023 Highlights

The Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering or the GATE Exam is conducted every year by one of the IITs namely IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, IIT Madras, IIT Bangalore, or the IISc Bangalore. This year IIT Kanpur has been given the responsibility to conduct the GATE 2023 Exam.

• Two new subject papers have been introduced recently viz. Geomatics Engineering (GE) and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NM).
• A candidate is allowed to appear for one or a maximum of two subject papers only. Two Paper combinations have to be chosen from the given list of combinations of papers. The final allotment of two papers will still be subject to the availability of infrastructure and dates.
• The GATE 2023 Exam will be conducted in a Computer Based Test (CBT) format with 8 zonal centres in 176 cities across India as well as selected cities in the countries of Bangladesh, Nepal, Singapore, and UAE.

2nd December 2022: GATE International Exam Center Notice Out!

The IIT Kanpur has released a notification regarding the International Exam Centers. The GATE Centres at Dhaka (Bangladesh), Kathmandu (Nepal), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Male (Maldives), Port Louis (Mauritius), Singapore (Singapore) and Thimphu (Bhutan) are withdrawn due to operational issues. What is GATE Exam?

The GATE Exam i.e. Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering is a national-level examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. The GATE 2023 examination will be conducted in different cities across India as well as selected cities in the countries of Bangladesh, Nepal, Singapore, and UAE. The examination would be a Computer Based Test (CBT).

Why should one appear in the GATE Exam?

Candidates who aspire to take admitted into any Master’s Program like Master of Engineering (M.E.) or Master of Technology (M.Tech) courses at various IITs, NITs, IISc, GFTIs, and other state and national institutions in India should appear for the GATE Exam. Some foreign universities consider GATE Scores for admission. Candidates who score a high score in the GATE Examinations also have a chance to secure a job in PSUs, Central Government as well as in the Private Sector.

What’s new in the GATE Exam 2023?

Similar to every year, the notification for GATE 2023 was released by IIT Kanpur on 27th July 2022. The GATE official notification was released which is a detailed brochure that consists of all the information related to the exam and introduced a few new things. Below are all the changes we will see in the GATE 2023 exam.

• Two new Papers: The GATE 2023 has introduced 2 new papers (Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering and Geomatics Engineering).
• Exam Center: The Ambajogau City exam center which comes in the IIT Bombay zone is dropped by IIT Kanpur. There are a total of 23 new exam centers added which means the GATE exam will be conducted on a total of 218 centers.
• Eligibility Criteria Relaxed: Now candidates who are in the third year of an undergraduate course can also apply for the GATE exam. Earlier the eligibility for the GATE exam was a minimum of 10+2+4.
• Two-Paper Combination: Now candidate can attempt two papers in GATE 2023. However, these 2 papers should be in a specific combination which we mentioned in the article.

GATE 2023 Notification

The GATE Notification 2023 was released on 27th July 2022 by the GATE 2023 Organising Institute IIT Kanpur. The GATE 2023 Official Notification states the GATE 2023 Registration Date will be from 30th August 2022 to 4th September 2022 (Extended till 7th October 2022). The GATE 2023 Exam Date as per the official notification is the 4th, 5th, 11th, and 12th of February 2023.

GATE Exam Papers and Codes

GATE 2023 Exam Date

The GATE 2023 Exam is scheduled on the 4th, 5th, 11th, and 12th February 2023. We have shared the important dates for the GATE Exam 2023 below. Candidates can check the different dates for each event below. This table will be updated from time to time with GATE Exam Dates as per the new releases by the GATE Committee. 

GATE Application Form 2023

Candidates should register themselves on the GATE GOAPS (GATE Online Application Processing System) Portal. The GATE GOAPS is an online application portal where candidates need to register themselves and create a login ID, and password. Further, they need to log in using their credentials and complete the GATE Application Process 2023 by filling in their details and uploading their documents like photographs, signatures, and other important documents. In the end, after filling out all the necessary details they need to pay the GATE Application Fee to complete their application process. 

The steps to apply online for the GATE Humanities and Social Sciences Exam is listed below. 

Step 1: Visit the official website of GOAPS.

Step 2: Register and fill in the required details on the registration portal. 

Step 3: Your Registration ID will be generated and a password is needed to be created by the candidate. Save the Registration ID and password for future reference.

Step 4: Log in with the Registration ID and password to complete the registration process.

Step 5: Upload a scanned recent photograph, signature, and other necessary documents. Candidates can use the Testbook Photo cropping tool to resize their image and signature as per the guidelines. 

Step 6: Click on Save and Submit. 

Step 7: Pay the application fee through any of the electronic payment modes.

GATE Exam Fees

The application fee for the GATE 2023 is neither refundable nor transferable. Payments have to be made online by using net banking / debit card / credit card / wallet / UPI / etc. As per the prevailing norms, additional online transaction charges or bank charges may be applicable. These charges will be specified on the payment portal.

• The GATE 2023 Registration fee does not include any service charges, processing fees, and any other charges that the banks may levy. 
• For two papers the amount of fee is twice that of a single paper.
• Candidates with benchmark disability will be eligible for fee concession.

GATE 2023 Paper Combination

This year candidates can choose to attempt 2 different GATE papers. However, the GATE paper should be in a specific combination mentioned in the GATE 2023 official brochure. The below mentions the codes of papers allowed as the second paper for a specific first paper.

GATE Exam Organizing Institutes

The GATE exam is organized by IISc Banglore and 7 IITs (IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, IIT Bombay, and IIT Kanpur) on a rotational basis. The following table mentions all the GATE Organising Institutes from 1995 till 2023.

GATE Application Form Correction

The candidates can make corrections in their application forms by paying the required fee only within the application window. The options to make corrections are available from 8th to 14th November 2022. Here are the steps that you can refer to make corrections to the GATE application form.

GATE Application Correction Fee

As mentioned above, the candidates will have to pay a fee to make corrections to their applications. The fees depends upon the type of the corrections you need to make. Below are the details of the same.

GATE Selection Process

• There will be two CutOffs- one GATE Qualifying CutOff which will be released by the GATE Committee and the other one is the GATE Admission CutOff released by respective institutions for the admission process. Candidates need to qualify for both to secure admission in the IITs and NITs. 

• Call for admissions to M.Tech. /PhD or any other program will be advertised separately by the respective institutions and GATE Committee is NOT responsible for the admission process.

• GATE qualification does not assure a PSU job, as that depends on the recruitment procedure of the concerned PSU. GATE Committee is not responsible for any employment opportunities. The qualified candidates must check newspapers and other reliable sources for any such information.
• For securing a PSU Job candidates will have to sit for an interview and the recruitment decision will be taken solely by the PSU Recruitment Authorities. 

GATE Eligibility Criteria 2023

There is no age limit to appear for the GATE 2023 examination. A candidate who is currently studying in the third or higher years of any undergraduate degree program or has already completed any Government approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts is eligible for appearing in the GATE 2023 Exam. Candidates must ensure the below-mentioned educational qualifications under GATE Eligibility Criteria before applying for the GATE Exam 2023 Applications. Candidates should take note that certificates/qualifications awarded by professional bodies/institutions upto 31st May 2013 will stand recognized.

GATE Exam Pattern

The GATE Exam Pattern is shared below in the table like Marking Scheme, Number and Type of Questions and Negative Marking.

GATE Marking Scheme

The GATE Papers will be a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks, out of which 10 questions carrying a total of 15 marks will be on General Aptitude (GA), which is intended to test the Language and Analytical Skills typically and one paper will be subject specific. GATE 2023 Admit Card

GATE 2023 Admit Card will be available on 9th January 2023 to download. Candidates can either click on the direct link given below or follow the steps mentioned below to download the GATE Hall Ticket 2023.

• Admit Card will have your exam centre, name photograph, and signature.
• Candidates must verify the given information before downloading the GATE Admit Card.
• Candidates must print multiple copies of the admit card for GATE 2023 to avoid discrepancies on the exam day.
• In case of any discrepancy, you should immediately report the conducting authority i.e. IIT Delhi.
• Candidates should take a Printout of GATE Admit Card 2023

Steps to download GATE Admit Card 2023

Step 1: Visit the official website of GATE. 

Step 2: Click on the ‘Admit Card Out’ notification on the main page.

Step 3: Enter your Registration Number and Password.

Step 4: Your GATE Admit Card 2023 will be displayed on the screen. 

Step 5: Verify the information mentioned on the Admit Card before downloading the GATE Admit Card.

Step 6: In case of any discrepancy, immediately report the same to the conducting authority.

Step 7: If there are no discrepancies, then you can take the printout of the GATE Admit Card 2023. 

GATE Exam Center

Candidates must have prior knowledge about GATE Exam Center beforehand as it will help you to reach conveniently at your centre on the day of the exam. The board has divided exam centres according to the different zones. How to Change the GATE 2023 Exam Centre?

If you are facing any issue with the already filled exam centre in your application then in this case, the board has provided a facility to change the exam centre. Candidates can change their exam city in the GATE application form by sending a request to the authorities. Candidates must send requests through the official website of GOAPS. • Candidates must have a valid reason why they want to change the exam centre.
• Candidates have to pay a valid fee against the changes in the application form.
• Fee payment will be done online only.

GATE 2023 Answer Key

IIT Kanpur will release the tentative and the official answer keys for GATE 2023 (all papers) on its Official Website. Candidates can raise objections to the tentative GATE answer key if they find any discrepancy in it, after that the final answer key will be released. There will be separate question papers and answer key sets for all the separate sessions. Candidates can view the GATE answer keys by logging in through User Registration details. Candidates can challenge the tentative answer key by paying a nominal fee.

GATE Result 2023

The GATE Result 2023 will be released on 16th March 2023 on the official website. Candidates can visit the website and download the GATE Result with the help of their application number and other credentials. GATE Marks will be announced as per the stream and paper code. GATE 2023 scorecard will be out after 1 day of the result declaration and will be valid for 3 years from the date of announcement of the results. Step 3: Click on the link and log in using your credentials.

Step 4: The result is displayed on your screen. 

Step 5: You can print the GATE Results 2023 and keep it for future reference.

GATE Scorecard 2023

After the declaration of results, GATE Scorecard can be downloaded for free of cost between 21st March 2023 to 31st May 2023 from the GATE 2023 website. In case, GATE qualified candidates require the softcopy of their GATE Scorecard after 31st May 2023 and till 31st December 2023, they have to pay a fee of ₹ 500 per paper for obtaining the same. 

NOTE: From 1st January 2024 onwards, no scorecard will be issued for GATE 2023 qualified candidates. There is no provision for the issue of hard copies of the GATE Scorecard.

Use of GATE Scorecard for Employment

Direct recruitment to Group A level posts in Central government, i.e., Senior Field Officer (Tele), Senior Research Officer (Crypto), and Senior Research Officer (S&T) in Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India, is now being carried out on the basis of GATE score. The details of the scheme of recruitment are normally published in National Newspapers / Employment News / Rozgar Samachar by the concerned authority. Some other Government of India Organizations may also utilize GATE 2023 score for their recruitment purpose. Even some Public Service Undertakings (PSUs) also use GATE Score to shortlist candidates, like- Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Coal India Limited (CIL), Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), and many other. 

However, GATE Qualification does not assure a PSU or other jobs and the recruitment depends upon the concerned authority, not the GATE Committee. Candidates will have to go through an interview round and after that their performance in the interview and their scores will be evaluated to check their suitability.

The order to calculate the scores, GATE uses raw marks as the exam is conducted in multiple sessions. The marks scored by the candidates can later be normalized to compute the GATE score.

GATE Admission Process 2023

GATE 2023 Cutoff

GATE Cutoff is the minimum mark a candidate requires in order to qualify for the GATE exam. GATE College wise Cut off

If you score more than the GATE Cut off, you'll pass the GATE exam, however, this does not mean that you'll be able to get admission to the M. Tech program in Top IITs, and NITs by just passing the exam. For that, candidates must have more scores that define GATE organisation-wise Cut off. Difference Between GATE Qualifying Cut-Off Vs. Admission Cut-Off

Candidates often get confused between GATE Qualifying Cut-Off and Admission Cut-Off. Here we have mentioned a few points that will help you differentiate between the two. 

GATE Counselling

The GATE Counselling is not done by the exam conducting body thus IIT Kanpur will not be conducting the GATE Counselling it will be conducted by separate institutions. Candidates who aspire to take admission in IITs have to go for the GATE COAP Counselling and candidates who want to take admission in NITs will have to go for GATE CCMT Counselling. The GATE Counselling will begin in the month of April-May 2023. Candidates will have to register themselves for the GATE counselling schedule. 

GATE COAP Counselling

The GATE COAP or Common Offer Acceptance Portal Counselling is conducted for admission to the IITs. Candidates need to register themselves on the GATE COAP 2023 Portal, where all Participating Institutes/PSUs upload their admission/job offers. The registrations will start right after the declaration of the result in the month of April-May. Only candidates who have qualified for the GATE CutOff will be eligible for the GATE COAP Counselling. 

• Seats will be offered on the basis of the GATE scores, cutoff, and the preferences filled by the candidate.
• Candidates who wish to accept the seats need to complete the process by logging in to the institute portal, submitting fees, and the mandatory documents.
• Candidates who register for COAP 2023 also need to apply to the desired IIT for M.Tech admission.
• The participating institutions in the GATE COAP Process- IISc Bangalore, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Kanpur, IIT BHU, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Mandi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Patna, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Roorkee.

GATE CCMT Counselling

The GATE CCMT Counselling or the Centralised Counselling for M.Tech is held for the admission of the candidates into the NITs, IIITs, CFTIs, and IIEST Shibpur. Candidates who have a valid scorecard can apply for the GATE CCMT Counselling. In CCMT Counselling candidates need not apply for the desired NIT separately. GATE CCMT CutOff for NITs is released by the organizing institute in the form of opening and closing ranks.
