SSC CHSL Exam Pattern
The SSC CHSL exam is conducted for posts such as Lower Divisional Clerks (LDCs), Data Entry Operators (DEOs) and Postal Assistants/Sorting Assistants (PAs/SAs). The exam pattern consists of three different stages i.e Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III. Tier I is the written exam, Tier II is the Skill Test and Tier III is the Document Verification. The written exam consists of multiple-choice questions, while the skill test and document verification are designed to assess the candidate's skills and knowledge.
The advantage of SSC CHSL exam pattern is that it allows for a systematic and organized way of assessing a candidate's knowledge, skills and abilities. It also helps to ensure that all applicants are assessed in the same manner, making it easier to compare and rank the applicants. The exam pattern also helps to identify the areas where the candidate may need to improve in order to be successful in the exam.
SSC CHSL Postal Assistant Exam Pattern is the same as that of LDC and DEO, except that the syllabus is different. For example, the syllabus for Postal Assistant includes topics like Postal Service, Post Office Accounts, Postal Laws and Regulations, etc., which are not covered in LDC or DEO syllabus. SSC CHSL Tier I Exam Pattern for 2023
The SSC CHSL tier 1 exam is an online multiple choice based test conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) to recruit candidates for the post of Lower Division Clerk (LDC) and Data Entry Operator (DEO). Candidates can get an idea of the SSC CHSL Tier 1 Exam Pattern from the table below.
The SSC CHSL Selection Process for Tier- 1 is given below.
- The Tier-1 exam consists of multiple-choice questions (objective).
- Language of question paper will be in both the languages Hindi and English
- Candidates will be awarded 2 marks for every correct answer and 0.50 marks will get deducted for every incorrect answer.
- The total score in tier-1 will be 200.
- Candidates will get a maximum of 1 hour to complete the examination.
- Tier I will be qualifying in nature.

SSC CHSL Exam Pattern for Tier II
- The Tier-II will be held in two sessions - Session –I & Session II, on the same day. Session-I will include conducting Section-I, Section II and Module-I of Section III. Session II will include conducting Module-II of Section III.
- It will be mandatory for the candidates to qualify for all Tier-II sections.
- Tier II will consist of Objective Type, Multiple choice questions, except for Module II of Section III. The questions will be set in English and Hindi except for Module II (i.e. English Language and Comprehension module) in Section II.
- There will be a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer in Section-I, Section II and Module-I of Section III. Candidates are, therefore, advised to keep this in mind while answering the questions.
- Module-I of Section-III i.e. Computer Knowledge Test is mandatory but qualifying in nature.
- Skill Test/ Typing Test will be of qualifying nature.
- Part A - Skill Test for the post of DEO/ DEO Grade 'A’: ‘Data Entry Speed of 8,000 (Eight Thousand) Key Depressions per hour on Computer’ will be adjudged on the basis of the correct entry of words/ key depressions as per the given passage.
- Part B - Typing Test for other posts i.e. LDC/ JSA: Candidates opting for English medium should have a typing speed of 35 words per minute (w.p.m.) and those opting for Hindi medium should have typing speed of 30 words per minute (w.p.m.). 35 w.p.m. and 30 w.p.m. correspond to about 10500 key depressions per hour and about 9000 key depressions per hour respectively.

Skill Test for SSC CHSL Data Entry Operator Post:
- Candidates need to show 8000 depression per hour to clear this test for Data entry Operator`s post. This will be qualifying in nature
- Errors in the Skill Test will be calculated up to 2 decimal places.
- The skill test will be conducted on the computer. An exam center and respective agency will be notified in the notification. candidates will have to check an official website for more details.
- Only applicants who have the minimum required speed will be recommended for the merit list.
- The duration of the Test will be 15 minutes and printed matter in English containing about 2000-2200 key-depressions would be given to each candidate who would enter the same in the Computer.
- Data Entry Speed of 8,000 (eight thousand) Key Depressions per hour on Computer will be calculated. The speed of 8000 key depressions per hour on computer‟ will be judged on the basis of the correct entry of words/ key depressions as per the given passage.
- Candidates eligible for scribe will be given compensatory time of 5 minutes. Therefore the duration of the Skill Test for such candidates will be 20 minutes.

Typing Test for PA/SA & LC:
- Candidates will have an option to type in Hindi or English. This test will be qualifying in nature.
- This will be a computer-based test to test the candidate`s speed and accuracy. Applicants will have to type a given text paragraph in 10 minutes of the time span.
- Typing Test for LDC (Lower Division Clerk)/ JSA (Junior Secretariat Assistant) and Postal Assistant/ Sorting Assistant:
- Candidates opting for English medium should have typing speed of 35 words per minute (w.p.m.) and those opting for Hindi medium should have typing speed of 30 words per minute (w.p.m.). 35 w.p.m. and 30 w.p.m. correspond to about 10500 key depressions per hour and about 9000 key depressions per hour respectively.
- Persons with Disabilities candidates who claim to be permanently unfit to take the Typing Test because of a physical disability may, with the prior approval of the Commission, be exempted from the requirement of appearing and qualifying at such test, provided such a candidate submits a Certificate in the prescribed format to the Commission from the competent Medical Authority, i.e., the Civil Surgeon of a Government Health Care Institution declaring him/ her to be permanently unfit for the Typing Test because of a physical disability.
- Passage Dictators will be provided to those VH candidates for the Typing test who have opted for Scribe in the online Application Form. The Passage Dictator will read out the passage to the VH candidate within the allotted time period.
- Candidates eligible for scribe will be given compensatory time of 5 minutes. Therefore the duration of Typing Test for such candidates will be 15 minutes. Refer the table below for a better idea about the skill test
